Tom Bailey of The Thompson Twins made a stop at the Kent Stage on Wednesday night.  He's out supporting his recently released album titled Science Fiction, which happens to be his first pop album in over 25 years.

 

Bailey and an all female backing band, consisting of a keyboardist, a drummer and a bassist/keyboardist, played all of the Thompson Twins tunes as well as a few new songs to perfection.  

 

Noting the sparse turn-out, Bailey said “There might not be many of us tonight, but we’re gonna have fun!”  

 

Dressed in all white, Bailey was a bundle of energy as he danced around the stage as he sang.  The multi-instrumentalist played the guitar, keyboards, percussion and even the harmonica through out the seventy-five minute set.  The light show and video projection also added to the concert experience.

 

The first half of the set consisted of mostly deeper album cuts from the Thompson Twins catalog such as:  “In The Name Of Love,” “Sister Mercey” and “You Take Me Up.”

 

Back to back hits “King For A Day” and “Lies” preceded two new songs, “Shooting Star” and “Come So Far.”  The two new songs sounded great and fit nicely into the set.

 

Closing out the set were “If You Were Here,” which was the song that played during the closing scene of Sixteen Candles when Molly Ringwald’s character Samantha and Jake kiss, and “Doctor! Doctor!”

 

The band came back to play the title track from Science Fiction and ended the evening with The Thompson Twins' biggest hit, “Hold Me Now.”

 

Bailey was correct, he and the audience certainly had fun.
